The Nuts and Bolts of Driver's Education and Certification

  • Course Structure

Grand Prix Driver’s Education classes consist of ten three-hour courses. We number each class 1-10. Students can begin the classroom portion of driver education upon turning 15 years and nine months old. The student is responsible for signing in on the attendance sheet. If they miss a class or FORGET TO SIGN the attendance sheet, they must make up that particular numbered class. Please call the office for the class number, location, make-up dates, and times. You must make up the correct class.

  • Driving Lessons

Students can start booking their driving lessons after they have completed the class and their guardian has completed the parent class. Driving hours are released every Monday for the following week. Students must have their learner’s permit in hardcopy each time they drive. They cannot drive without it. Lessons are by appointment and are a door-to-door service in most locations. We will not go over the bridge or past the Orleans rotary to pick up students. Please call the office to begin booking: 508-771-1227.

  • Home Pickups

Weekend driving lessons and lessons on Monday bank holidays will always be a pickup and drop off at a central location. You will need to arrange to get dropped off and picked back up at a pre-determined location for your lesson. For home pickups, the student must be ready up to ½ hour before the scheduled time. This time allows the instructor flexibility in case of scheduling or geographical problems and your observation time.

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: We must charge $85.00 per hour lesson for a CANCELLATION OR NO-SHOW if they are unavailable, unable, canceling, or just missed the driving appointment without a 24-hour notice. Also, you may only book your last six driving hours if you have paid your bill in full.

  • After Course Completion

Upon completion of the course and payment of the bill, Grand Prix will request that the student be certified. The student is eligible to schedule the road test for the license at that time.

If you decide to have Grand Prix sponsor you, WE MUST BE THE ONE TO BOOK YOUR TEST. Sponsorship includes using our car, the driving instructor as a sponsor, and an instructional warm-up lesson.

  • Refund and Cancellation Policies

If for any reason, a student decides not to complete the Driver’s Education Program, they may be entitled to a partial refund. The nonrefundable deposit of $330 covers the classroom portion. Grand Prix Driving School will not refund that amount regardless of the number of classes taken. We will refund additional payments with $85 per hour driven deducted. We charge a $50 administrative fee to anyone who cancels after having booked their first driving lesson.

Rules and Regulations

  • Classroom

    • We require ten attendance signatures (sign-ins) for classroom hour credit. Students must use their full legal name; nicknames or partial names are unacceptable. For every missed signature, the student must make up that particular class. This requirement holds even if the student was in the class.
    • Any student with physical or learning issues or IEPs at school must notify the classroom instructor before the start of class.
    • Students must be on time for each class. Latecomers will not be given credit for that session.
    • Students may not leave class early for any reason. They will not be given credit for that session if they must leave early.
    • All students must be respectful towards instructors and fellow students. Failure to behave responsibly will result in dismissal.
    • No gum in class.
    • No smoking is allowed on the premise at any time, including in the parking lots. This ban includes electronic cigarettes and vapes as well as chewing tobacco.
    • Shut off cell phones, smart watches, iPods, or any other technological device during class, including headphones. Do not bring anything unrelated to the class. The instructor will confiscate and keep devices used during class until the end of the day.
    • No hoods or hats are allowed in class.
    • All students must be respectful of their surroundings. No running, yelling, or misbehaving before, after, or during your breaks. Failure to behave responsibly will result in your dismissal.
    • Grand Prix will suspend or expel students in the case of severe disciplinary problems.
    • You are responsible for keeping track of classes attended. Grand Prix Driving School will only contact you about missing classes or finals once you have finished all driving hours.
    • Your name in all programs we use must be your full legal name.
    • You may not lie down during class.
    • Grand Prix strictly prohibits screenshots, pictures, audio/video recordings, and any virtual educational experience from protecting student privacy, proactively preventing potential cyberbullying, preventing the distribution of copyrighted materials, and complying with Massachusetts law. Please note that it is a crime in Massachusetts to record another person through any medium without their knowledge.
  • Driving

The student's parent must complete the parent class before the student can begin logging driving hours.

Bring your learner's permit to each driving hour. It is not legal to drive with only an electronic copy.

You must be ready up to ½ hour before each scheduled driving hour. Students must sign in for all driving hours. Students must use their full legal name; nicknames or partial names are unacceptable.

No-shows or cancellations without a 24-hour notice will be subject to an $85.00 charge PER hour of driving. This fee applies to your account automatically unless you have a doctor's note stating that the doctor has seen your child and they cannot drive. You will not be allowed to book driving hours until paying this fee.

All default pickup locations are at a student's primary address in Schedule2Drive unless they book a lesson at the dismissal time from FHS, Barnstable HS, Mashpee HS, SHS, and DY. You will need to arrange your transportation to these lessons. For instruction on weekend hours and Monday bank holidays, we will pre-determine a central location for pickup and drop off. You can place all other school pickups by calling the office.

  • Office Policies

    • Driving Hours are released every Monday at 3:00 PM for the following week. Students should call or use Schedule2Drive to book hours according to the rules listed on the page titled "List of Rules for Scheduling and Driving."
    • Students and parents may book and cancel driving hours with equal authority.
    • Students can book up to six hours with a balance on their account. To book the last six hours of instruction, the student must pay their balance in full.
    • Monthly payments are due regardless of whether or not the student has started driving or is currently driving. Grand Prix can suspend students for failure to make monthly payments.
    • Grand Prix will charge a fee of $25.00 for any resubmitted or returned checks.
    • Students must pay balances in cash or money orders for the remainder of the balance.
    • You will be certified after you have met all the requirements of driver's education and paid your bill, as well as any other outstanding fees.

Although my story of becoming a licensed driver is not the typical story, I know that I am not alone. If you can relate to this story in anyway, I urge you to enroll in driving lessons with Grand Prix Driving School and to be up front with them about your anxiety around driving. That will help them to pair you with the best instructor to meet your personalized needs. Trust me; doing so will be a life altering experience!

Getting my driver's license has been a 26-year long endeavor. I am a 42 year old woman who spent the majority of my life in complete and utter fear of driving, something that I knew was irrational but which I just couldn't seem to shake.

Following a bad experience while learning to drive as a teenager, I was essentially frozen in time. Because of my driving fears, I was precluded from becoming a happy and healthy, fully functioning member of society;

• I usually had to live within walking distance of my job, and career advancement was basically impossible. Plus, I can't even begin to tally the amount of time I spent waiting for buses or how many times I got caught in bad weather.

• I felt like a burden to my family. I had guilt about frequently asking them for rides and favors. They more or less had to arrange their lives around my transportation needs.

• My social life and ability to give back to my community was severely stiffled. Saying "no" to most opportunities became my default. Now I can say, "yes", "sure", or "why not" without even batting an eyelash!

• For decades, I went around feeling ashamed and embarrassed about not driving. My self-confidence was very low, and all major areas of my life suffered (my health and wellness, my interpersonal relationships, and my motivation to accomplish anything).

I will not pretend that getting my driver's license was easy. In fact, it was scary and intimidating at times, and I thought about quitting more than once. But I had an incredible instructor who helped me at every step and who comforted me with his calm and friendly demeanor, (with a good dose of humor thrown in, too). Even when I lacked faith, he didn't. Although my instructor was well-versed in his field, I never felt like he was judgy or condescending. In fact, he was caring and patient and let me do things at my own pace, which really helped to relax me.

Since passing my driver's test, it is obvious to all who know me that I am a new person. I have a spring in my step, a clear head, and a sense that anything is possible. Countless new paths and opportunities have opened before me, and I can't wait to see what the world has to offer!

Remember, if I can get my driver's license, so can you, no matter how stuck you feel. I have faith in you. Now is the time, and you will not regret it. Having a driver's license will revolutionize your life.
