3 Questions to Ask During Your Driver's Ed Course

Oct 09, 2023

Driving is the most common way for people to get around in the United States. Before you can get on the road, however, you have to learn how to drive. According to Mass.gov, a student must be 16 years old and have a valid learner’s permit before they can participate in a driver's ed course. For many students, taking a driver's ed course is required. If you've recently signed up for this course, here are three questions you should ask the instructor.

1. What's Covered in the First Lesson?

You want to get off on the right foot when you start the class, and that includes asking important questions. It's always good to get an early idea of what you'll be doing. Some instructors like to start you off slow while others might have you weaving in and out of traffic right away. You can adjust your expectations accordingly.

2. How Many Lessons Do I Have to Take?

Each person learns at a different pace during a driver's ed course. No matter how fast or slow they pick up important driving techniques, like turning or parking their vehicle, they must pass a road test. It's a good idea to ask the instructor how many lessons it takes before you can confidently take and pass the road test. Don't beat yourself up if you don't pass the first time!

3. Does Your Vehicle Have Dual Controls?

In many driver's ed courses, the instructor has their own wheel in the driven vehicle. That way, they can take control of the car if something happens. It's an added layer of protection. As you get more comfortable, they may use it less and less.

These are three basic questions. You might have more of them in mind, like how long they have been teaching and what their success ratio is. It might even be good to ask what the most common mistakes other students make so that you can know what to avoid. Listen to everything they say, and you should be observant of what's going on around you.
